A New Dawn for Debt Review in South Africa
How Consumer Debt Support and My Budget Fitness Are Helping South Africans Rebuild Their Financial Futures learning new skills in budget management and how they spend their money on debt repayments.
As we enter December and approach the festive season, we also enter one of the most dangerous times for financial scams in South Africa affecting 70% of consumer daily. Phishing attacks, cloned Facebook accounts, fake debt counselling companies, and fraudulent operators all spike during this period — preying on consumers who feel financially stretched or emotionally vulnerable.
Scammers know this. And they strike hard when you expect it the least and at your most vulnerable when you need to come out of debt review for example.
Recently, renowned Money web journalist Ryk van Niekerk exposed the shocking reality in his article “The 16-minute scam: How a cold call nearly put me under debt review.”
If you haven’t read it yet, it is essential reading. It reflects exactly what is happening every single day to South Africans across the country.
The Rise — and Fall — of Fake Debt Review Companies the NCR is working hard to combat this problem
These scam operators are everywhere:
- Calling consumers from high-pressure call centres
- Running fake Facebook pages and websites
- Cloning legitimate business profiles
- Pushing deceptive “interest reduction” or “consolidation” deals
- Tricking consumers into signing documents that place them under debt review without consent
- They target the vulnerable — the desperate — and the uninformed.
The hard truth: understand who can offer services when it comes to your debt review application or wanting to come out of debt review.
- A call centre agent CANNOT place you under debt review.
- The NCR does NOT phone consumers about interest rates or debt review.
- Your bank will never call you to tell you that you’re paying too much interest.
- You cannot legally be placed into debt review simply to “reduce interest.”
- A non-registered debt counsellor can’t place you into debt review.
These lies are crafted to manipulate you into signing fraudulent documents pretending to be “quotes” or “interest reduction forms.” In reality, they are debt review agreements — locking you into a process you never consented to. Falsification of signatures on systems generated documents and so on…
Many of these agents are untrained, uncertified, and in most cases not even matriculated. Their only instruction: “Get the signature.” sign up and close the deal.
